Fans of “The Godfather” may be interested to learn that one of the principal houses from “The Godfather: Part II” is none other than Fleur du Lac, located on the west shore of Lake Tahoe. And while the residence is the Lake Tahoe extension of crime boss Michael Corleone’s connections in the film, the real-life story behind the building is similarly interesting.
The estate consists of 17 homes, which today have been carved into luxury condos. They were built, however, as a hideaway for Henry Kaiser, the tycoon behind the Hoover Dam, in 1938. When Kaiser purchased the property, he wanted to host a party to celebrate the completion of the Dam there, and so he had more than 300 construction workers dedicated to the project in eight-hour shifts 24 hours a day.
Once the compound was complete, it served as a vacation destination for Kaiser and the heads of five other companies that were instrumental in completing the Hoover Dam project. In addition to the residences, the compound had servants quarters and a yacht club designed for socializing.
Since it was first constructed, Fleur du Lac has changed hands, and more structures have been built on the property, somewhat spoiling the effect of the original location. The main Fleur du Lac mansion remains the stuff of legend around North Lake Tahoe, as it is closed to the public and cannot be seen from the road. Some of the buildings have turned into meeting spaces or banquet halls, providing lucky invited guests with a glimpse inside of this secretive compound.
Still, fans of the movie love knowing that the mythical filming location is really a part of Lake Tahoe and its lore. It’s just a half hour drive from Pelton Pines in Incline Village, so your family could go for a visit.
